When Roshawn came to Valley Residential Services more than 20 years ago, she carried with her a lifetime of challenges. Removed from an abusive home as a young child, she spent much of her childhood in foster care and experienced significant trauma. Along with autism, PTSD, hip dysplasia, and other developmental and behavioral challenges, Rashon struggled with self-injurious behaviors and emotional regulation.
In her early years at VRS, staff worked tirelessly to keep her safe. She often injured herself during moments of distress, requiring protective equipment such as helmets and padded
environments. Daily routines could be difficult, and even small changes or unexpected interactions could trigger intense anxiety.
Today, the transformation is remarkable. Through decades of patient, consistent support and the dedication of long-term staff who earned her trust, Roshawn has built a life filled with stability, routine, and meaningful relationships. The helmets and mats are gone. The self-injurious behaviors that once dominated her life have dramatically decreased. While she still faces challenges, she is thriving in ways that once seemed impossible.
Her story is a powerful reminder that healing takes time, trust, and unwavering support. For Roshawn, the stable environment and caring staff at VRS have made all the difference. The person we see today is a testament to what can happen when someone is given the opportunity, patience, and support they deserve.
