A Smile That Says Everything: Noelia’s Story

Updated: Apr 10

For Noelia, family doesn’t look the way it does for most people. There are no regular visits, no holiday gatherings, no familiar voices calling just to check in. But that doesn’t mean she is without family.

At Valley Residential Services, Noelia has found her people.

Noelia has spent her entire life in supported living, starting in another facility. She lives with spastic cerebral palsy and is nonverbal, relying entirely on caregivers for every aspect of her daily life—from feeding through a feeding tube to personal care and mobility. She uses a wheelchair and requires full support, every single day.

And yet…if you meet Noelia, none of that is what stays with you.

It’s her smile.

Though she does not use words, Noelia communicates in ways that are unmistakable. Her expressions, her reactions, the light in her eyes—especially when she sees familiar staff and friends—tell a story of connection, trust, and joy. Her smile is warm, genuine, and completely infectious. It has a way of filling a room and reminding everyone around her why this work matters.

After many years in other supported living settings, Noelia came to Valley Residential Services in 2024. And since then, something remarkable has happened—she has blossomed.

She now spends her days in one of the VRS homes—engaged, included, and truly part of everyday life. Whether it’s time with her roommates, shared activities, or simply being surrounded by people who know and care for her, Noelia is not just being cared for—she is living.

Because without Valley Residential Services, Noelia’s life would look very different.

She would likely be living in an institutional setting—one where the ability to provide the kind of one-on-one, personalized care she needs simply doesn’t exist. The small, meaningful moments. The familiar faces. The individualized attention. The sense of belonging.

Those things matter.

And for Noelia, they make all the difference.

Without VRS, she would not have the stability of a home. She would not have the rhythm of daily living. She would not have the circle of people who celebrate her, advocate for her, and show up for her every day.

Simply put—she would not have a family.

But today, she does.

At Valley Residential Services, family is not defined by blood—it is defined by presence,

compassion, and commitment. It is found in the caregivers who greet her each morning, the roommates who share in her daily life, and the staff who understand that even without words, Noelia has so much to say.

And if you ever wonder what that looks like…

Just look at her smile
