Across the country, there is growing discussion about potential federal budget changes that could affect programs like SNAP (food assistance) and Medicaid. Families, veterans, and providers are understandably asking: Will these changes affect the people we serve?
At this time, there are no widespread cuts to SNAP or disability services for most individuals, but there is uncertainty ahead.
People with documented disabilities typically qualify for exemptions from work requirements and remain eligible for essential supports. However, proposed federal budget changes could lead to tighter funding, more frequent eligibility reviews, and increased administrative requirements. While individuals with developmental disabilities are not being directly targeted, they could be indirectly affected if funding levels change or states adjust program rules.
Veterans in our Corps of Recovery Discovery (CORD) program may also have questions about SNAP. Many veterans qualify for food assistance while they are in transitional housing or rebuilding stability after service. Currently, veterans are not being singled out for benefit cuts. However, as with other populations, potential policy changes could mean more paperwork, eligibility reviews, or shifts in funding that may impact access to benefits.
For Valley Residential Services, these programs are critical. Many of the adults, families, and veterans we serve rely on SNAP to help meet basic nutrition needs and on Medicaid to support services that make daily life possible—supported living, family support, and community-based care.
We are closely monitoring developments at the federal and state levels and will continue advocating for the people we serve. Our commitment remains the same: to ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities, veterans, and families have access to the resources, dignity, and stability they deserve.
We will share updates as more information becomes available.
